‘Shape Your Destiny’
Motivational Event For Youth
On Wednesday, the 23rd of August, WayFYnders held the ‘Shape Your Destiny’ Youth Conference. Facilitated by Darren Pereira and hosted at Te Oro, it was a day full of inspiration, pumping music and good fun.
Darren’s workshop focused heaps on unlocking our potential and discovering our purpose. He encouraged us to learn more about ourselves, our strengths and talents, and harness these to uplift ourselves and our communities. “You can make a small difference to a large number of people, or a large difference to a small number of people— but a difference you must make.“
It was also important for us to know our purpose and passions so that we could use these to consider our future career options. This is so we can do what we love and love what we do. We even evaluated our personality types to better understand ourselves and the possible career pathways we could take.
Darren also pushed us to shape our destiny despite our challenges and obstacles. Darren got us to do trust falls to teach us to overcome our fears and trust in one another. Initially, a bunch of us were hesitant to participate, but because everyone was so supportive of each other, we all got into it.

Trip to Wellington for Festival of the Future
Festival for the Future is Aotearoa’s biggest leadership and innovation summit. It has a strong vision to back young people in changing the world. Our Executive Committee were given the opportunity to fly to Wellington in June, for 2 nights and experience this mind-blowing event in the new Tākina Events Centre.
There were several groups of speakers covering the future of one subject, and afterwards we had a selection of 7 workshops and panels (such as future of food, business, science, technology) that we were able to visit and learn more about.
Listening to the speakers talk about the future, interacting in workshops and being in a new city was perspective-changing for us all. Half of us had never even been on a plane or out of Auckland before.
